Michael Jackson, James Brown, and Prince. On one stage. In 1983. This video is ridic. Straight up ridic. The specialness of this video exists only because it was created in a world before smartphones.
After watching this video, I decided to stop taking general photos of cool things with my smartphone. Cool things like the Hope Outdoor Gallery in Austin. Or a photo of me with my Trudy’s margarita martini. Because everybody knows what that shit looks like. And if they don’t, they can google it.
I cherish photos of my parents when they were younger. What will my kids see of me? Will they ever have a moment that feels like looking back into history? Or will they grow up in a timeline of constant, photographic familiarity? Having a sense of history is grounding.
